TGHBPSC: Month 1 Check In

Ladies, we have made it one whole month! YAY!!! Can you sense my excitement? For some of you wearing protective styles hasn't been easy but I want to congratulate you for hanging in there and seeking advice from the other TGHBPSC participants. I have had so much fun emailing you all back and forth, exchanging photos and watching the videos/style tutorials posted! Keep them coming.

Today is style day for me  (hence why the massive hair is in a puff in the pic) and I will attempt to do a length check for y'all. I am hoping to make a style tutorial video today along with a quick video check in on YT. School started for me Monday and I am swamped-- it's only the third day! If that doesn't happen to day, I will have it done by the weekend.

So, this post is just a reminder that we made it ONE MONTH protecting our strands and I am excited to see everyone's progress another month from now. LET'S KEEP GROWING!

xoxo,
Alex

A Man's P.O.V: Dee

Last week I announced on Twitter that I needed some more men's POV features on the blog! @ShawnE2120 let me know that her hubby Dee would be more than interested to answer a few questions. I am very excited to share this post with you all and I hope you enjoy.

How important is a woman’s hair to you?
Very, I love neat, clean, and hair that smells good.

Did your wife have to wear her hair a certain way to keep grab your interest? (i.e. which styles down vs. ponytail vs. bun, hair length?) Not at all as long as it looks nice and she feels confident, I love it.

Do you think that there is a ‘Natural Hair Movement’ or trend going on these days? Why do you think so many women are choosing to go natural now, do you think it’s a fad?
I do think it’s a movement, a positive one. I think more women are becoming comfortable with being themselves and mite caring about what others say about them. However, I don't think it’s a fad, I hope it’s here to stay.

Do you support your partner's/family members (i.e. mother, sister, daughter) decision on going natural? Not only have I supported my wife. I actually did her big chop. My daughters are natural as well and they always ask my opinion when mommy finishes styling; I love it.

Heavenly Twist Out

I am shocked to say the least! My twist out (bangs) came out so freaking good today, exciting! I co-washed and twisted my hair on Saturday into my usual up-do. As you all know I like leaving my bangs out for a little extra flare. I stretched the bang area with cool air and twisted with Enso Naturals Twisting Pudding. Initially I had the twists tucked and rolled into a cute pompadour. I wanted something different today so I took them down and was immediately pleased with the results; a full, defined and soft twist out! I had to share the pictures with y'all, click the jump for more!

Puff Bun

Exciting news today! I finally switched my hairstyle up and I could not be happier with the outcome. Lately, I have been very hesitant on trying  new styles. My hair is RIDICULOUSLY fragile and I've found that too much manipulation will only cause breakage, so for the most part I keep things very low key style wise.  Tuesday, my friend Keeta from "All Things Keeta Ray" had her hair styled SO CUTE! Of course I made her dish on how she achieved the look. She said that she saw a "Puff Bun" tutorial on Curly Nikki's site and decided to try it.  The video she sent me can be found here for those of you who want to watch.  The puff bun is a GREAT protective style and it's super wearable and cute! I think I am in love... LOL

What I Did
1. Took down my twists
2. Moisturized with Lavender tea water
3. Stretched my hair from the root with a afro pick
4. Gathered my hair in a puff using a black stretchy shoe string
5. Once the puff was secure I tucked and rolled the hair and pinned with straight pins

Captured Curls: Coreene

Please, introduce yourself!
My name is Coreene and I am a Health and Fitness Specialist.
What is your current hair care regimen?
I don't currently have a set regimen : (  I usually get product build-up fairly quickly though, so I usually have to wash with a sulfate free shampoo once or twice a week.  I also will co-wash whenever I feel necessary.  I mostly wear wash and go's and use Deva products.  The Heaven in Hair conditioner is a must for me!  I would love to wear more twist outs, but I just have not been able to get my hair to hold it well enough.

What is your hair type?
My hair is a mixture of type 3 curls and frizzy.  The bottom is very curly and the top pieces are wavy.
What reaction did you get when you first decided to go natural?
I started trying to wear my hair curly consistently around August 2010 and I got mixed reactions.  Most people liked it though. My friends love my hair curly and big.  My brothers and dad could care less what I do to my hair lol.  Now my mother on the other hand, really dislikes it.  She doesn't think it looks nice or neat.  She is constantly asking me when/if I’m going to straighten my hair, suggesting that I get relaxers to, "make it easier for me" and going out of her way to tell me how nice I look when my hair is straightened.

A Man's P.O.V: Branden

One of my favorite men in the world is sharing thoughts with us about his view on natural hair. I am excited to share this with you all, I hope you enjoy!

How important is a woman’s hair to you? Especially if you are dating her, does she have to wear her hair a certain way to keep grab your interest? (i.e. which styles down vs. ponytail vs. bun, hair length?)

A woman’s hair is not really that important to me. I think men are taught to equate a certain length or style of hair with beauty but I don’t share that view. A woman would have to do more than just wear her hair a certain way to grab my interest.

Do you think that there is a ‘Natural Hair Movement’ or trend going on these days? Why do you think so many women are choosing to go natural now, do you think it’s a fad?

I don’t think there’s a “Natural Hair Movement” or trend or fad per se going on now. When you look at history, there have always been those women who wore weaves and permed their hair to look more appealing or in line with the White American standard of beauty but since the Civil Rights and Black Power Movement in the 60’s, there has also been more women who have taken to embracing their hair in its natural state and truly believe that they are beautiful without need for alteration.

I think so many women are choosing to go natural now because it has become popular again. Today’s culture is attracted to anything that seems different and for most, loving yourself is an entirely different concept but one that I absolutely love and embrace.

Would you support your partner or family members (i.e. mother, sister, daughter) if she decided to become natural?
I would definitely support my partner or family member if they decided to become natural.

How important is hair texture to you? If your significant other were to go natural, would the texture of her hair affect your opinions on whether she should remain natural or not?

Captured Curls: Chelsi

Please, introduce yourself!
My Name is Chelsi Hilton I am an inspiring model, designer, and actor. I have a daughter named London who is Four years old and I am a college student as well.

What is your current hair care regimen?
My current regimen is that I take some pills that help my hair grow at the first of every month. I wash my hair also once a week. My hair has been growing pretty good as well. It comes almost down to the middle of my back.

What is your hair type and what works best for your texture?
My hair type right now is straightened style that is flat iron and it’s kind of bouncy. What works best my texture is natural oils and a good natural shampoo it does the trick. Since I have been doing this going on for 2-3 years I truly haven’t had a bad time with my hair at all.

What's in my Oil Bottle plus 1

As most of you know today was the Protective Style Challenge kick off, super exciting! Over 70 women are participating and corresponding via email which is great. I decided since I will be wearing my hair braided for the majority of the challenge I needed to go invest in a new and bigger applicator bottle to oil my scalp while the cornrows are in. What better place to go than Sally's BSS? I didn't know it'd be so hard to pick out a $2 plastic bottle but it was. LOL, I couldn't decide, there were so many options!

**The spray bottle has lavender and calendula flower hair tea in it. GREAT for spritzing and refreshing strands**

Any who, I finally made a decision and a went with the large 8 oz bottle with the red little snap thingy to keep the contents from spilling. I also picked up Olive Oil's Smooth-n-Pudding. *Tisk Tisk* on me, I shouldn't have bought this product but you can blame my friend Ava for luring me in. It was only $6.99 if that makes my pure PJ purchase any better. It doesn't, I know. BUT I was super excited to use the product when I got home and filling my applicator bottle with some yummy oils, was the highlight of my evening.

What's in my Mix

2 oz of EVOO - Rich in biotin, niacin, vitamins A and E

1 oz of apricot oil-Rich in essential fatty acids
1/2 oz argan oil- High in omega 3 and 9, unsaturated fatty acids

1 oz of castor oil- Cleans and rids scalp of impurities
2 oz of sweet almond oil- has the ability to soften the skin on the scalp and reduce
inflammation

**All items can be purchased on Ebay or at your local WholeFoods**
