Tell us a little about yourself? (ex.
name, age, state, school)
Name: Dennis Turner aka Mr. Turner
Age: 28
State: Washington, DC
School: Norfolk State University
How long have you been growing your locs?
I have been growing my locs for about 15
years now
What do you use on your hair, product
wise, to maintain it?
To wash, I use Organix Hydrating Teatree
Mint Shampoo, unless I go to my loctician. I also use Zuresh Honey Loc
(zuresh.com) and Jane Carter Solution Natural Hold Locking Spray.
How often do you have to wash and
re-twist your loc’s and who styles them?
I try to get them washed and re-twisted
every 3 weeks or so… and I can’t tell you all my secrets!! LOL
What do you think about women with
natural hair? Do you care if your woman is relaxed, natural or loc’d?
I think living in D.C., women here take
such pride in being natural so you see it all the time. I especially dig it around the spring/summer
when it seems the natural dos are the most fitting. As far as my preference, I
would say that I prefer a woman to be happy in the way she looks whether that
is processed or natural. The happiness comes out when you are simply happy with
the way you look.
Do you think women who choose to loc
their hair are sexy?
I think women who choose to loc are very
sexy. I could name a few…
What are the pros and cons about having
your hair loc’d?
Pro: once its done, all you really have
to do is wrap it up at night and you are good for a few weeks.
Con: The maintenance process is sometimes
grueling, as I don’t care much for sitting under the hair dryer.
What made you decide to loc your hair?
Have you always had hair or did you start your loc’s from “scratch.”
Actually a conversation with one of my
musical fathers, Mr. Kenneth Dickerson, began my process into research that
would later propel me into loc’ing my hair. We had a conversation about hair
and its direct connection to the CREATOR and how maintaining that symbolized
maintaining that relationship.
I had an afro before starting my
locs and my mom started my locs from two-strand twist she would make me take
out every two weeks trying to delay my loc’ing process lol. Finally one day I
decided to just let them loc and stopped letting her do my hair. She only had
one remark; “If they start to get nasty I’m cutting them off in your sleep!”
Love that woman!
What makes a woman’s hair beautiful to
you?
I believe it’s her confidence about her
hair that makes both her and her hair beautiful and goes with any hairstyle she
chooses to wear. Confidence is everything!
Do you have any advice for my readers who
are considering loc’ing their hair?
Do your research and have a real
commitment to it before you dive in. Growing locs takes time and we’ve all been
through the “ugly duckling” stage and wanted to give up. Just be patient and
they will grow!
